We went to see the new animated alien adventure movie, “Escape From Planet Earth” at the theaters this week. I had seen the preview and it looked really cute. I wasn’t disappointed. The teenagers said it was cute, even though it moves really fast (that was my 14 year old daughter’s main complaint).
The four year old, however, said it was a “good movie” when we got home. The two year old made it through about half of the show and then fell asleep (but that was only because he hadn’t taken a nap all day).
I liked the fact that there was an in-tact family in the movie, and that even though they had some problems, they worked them out in the end. I also liked that there was little if any crude humor that sometimes accompanies kid flicks. The emphasis was on the characters and story.
STORY:
The story opens with a little history on two alien rival brothers – the nerd and the jock – Scorch Supernova, who is the planetary hero (Brendan Fraser). The smart brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), heads up mission control at “BASA” – the alien version of NASA – and helps his brother behind the scenes to explore new worlds and complete dangerous missions. After receiving a distress signal and information about a mysterious “Dark Planet” (Earth), Scorch sets out to rescue the life-form(s) trapped there (at Area 51) – without telling his brother. Gary gets so angry at Scorch for putting himself in danger that he quits his job as space controller. Gary’s son who idolizes uncle Scorch and his wife end up forcing Gary to go on his own rescue mission when Scorch Supernova is captured.
THUMBS UP:
The Dove Foundation and the Parent’s Television Council have both given it a thumb’s up:
