On July 31st, 2008 these clouds could be seen from all over the Austin, Texas area. A few news channels and websites had photos sent in from amateur photographers as everyone scrambled to capture the amazing rainbow clouds. This is only a small corner (zoomed in) of a portion of the cloud… which is the only way the camera could capture even a slight bit of the intensity of color that brightened the blue sky that evening. It was spectacular. One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in the sky.
I was out pumping gas when I saw the guy at the next pump staring off in the sky, speechless. My husband and I looked up and couldn’t believe our eyes. It looked like an oil slick rainbow behind a thunder-cloud. It lit the whole sky from one side of the horizon to the other as the sun went down behind a mountain-range of cloud. It was brilliant. With ripples that sparkled in every hue. I ran in to the grocery store to get a disposable camera (pays to take your real camera everywhere you go!). I was so upset that I missed this photo op! It was truly once in a lifetime.
This photo, although completely un-altered, just doesn’t do it justice. I borrowed this picture from a friend of mine that goes to church with me. He took 80 shots of this amazing Texas sunset (if that tells you how spectacular it was). His wife copied all of the photos for me.
I wish you all could have seen it with your own eyes, though. It was God at His finest – showing off as usual. And I gave him a standing ovation! Bravo! Please do it again!

Isn’t God the coolest! I’m up in Canada, our provincial slogan is “Land of the living skies” – and it’s right on! It’s very flat up here, and so we can see a vast expanse of sky, great for summer sunsets and winter sunrises. I always tell the kids God gives us beautiful things to look at just because he loves us – what a great gift!

Wow! Those are gorgeous! I still remember being out at the ballfields on two different nights in the same week when there was a perfect double rainbow in the sky. Everyone just stopped what they were doing to stare out it.
God is truly amazing.

I was in Austin the beginning of this week, and though the sunsets were not quite so spectacular, they were still pretty brillant.
I can’t wait to be down there permanent! We’ve got an address now though!

Everyone – thanks so much for your comments. I’ve enjoyed reading them.
Sislisa – Thanks for the link! My kids will love that. I’ll have to share it with them tomorrow. Maybe they won’t be so bummed out to be starting school if I keep them interested in things they enjoy! 🙂 They both like science a lot.
Kris – I’ve seen a double rainbow, too – but haven’t photographed one yet.
MBR – hope you can get down here soon! 🙂 I know what it is like to finally move home to Texas after being away. 🙂
Ann – thanks for stopping in. I loved that post, by the way “Free Admission”. 🙂
shannonfabulous – your shots are great. and it happens that you just quoted from one of my VERY favorite hymns!
🙂 Thanks to each of you for awesome comments. You all make sharing photos fun!

Stopped by to visit today. Your blog takes a long time to load and sometimes locks up on me so I can’t visit as often as I’d like.
I love this picture. Breathtaking! The heavens declare…
Hope you aren’t feeling too whoozy. Congrats on your pregnancy!
